On June 20, 2014, the new market of Bazary Be in Toamasina, completely renovated by Ambatovy, was inaugurated in the presence of the President of the Republic of Madagascar, Hery Rajaonarimampianina and the Vice president of sustainable development of Ambatovy, Louis Roland-Gosselin. This market is one of the first projects financed by Ambatovy’s Social Investment Fund, which is intended to finance social projects and infrastructures in the Company’s intervention areas.
“It is with great pleasure that we are here today to deliver to the Municipality of Toamasina the new Bazary Be which we hope will participate in the development of trade exchange in the city of Toamasina and, thereby, its enrichment,” said Ambatovy’s Vice President of Sustainability, Louis Roland-Gosselin, during the inauguration ceremony. “Our greatest wish is to actively contribute to the development of Madagascar in several ways: we want to help your Government to convince other major investors to settle in Madagascar, we want to participate in the development and the expansion of the country’s economic fabric, and we want to contribute to the training of the actors of this development, particularly through vocational training.”
The new market, which covers a surface area of 5,300 m², will accommodate more than 750 merchants. The market has several related facilities, such as water points and toilets. In addition to the main building which will host shops selling food and manufactured items, fishmongers, and fast food sellers, pavilions and shelters are also available for merchants selling handicrafts, furniture, and fruit as well as flower and leaf plants.
As a reminder, in 2012, as part of its commitment to sustainable development, Ambatovy implemented a Social Investment Fund, amounting to USD25 million, to finance social projects and infrastructure in the Company’s intervention areas. Projects are selected in consultation with the regional authorities and the Government of Madagascar in order to contribute to the social and economic development of the populations in these regions. Eight projects are currently being funded by Ambatovy’s Social Investment Fund, including the poultry project Harenasoa in the municipalities traversed by the pipeline, the destruction of ammonia at the former ZEREN site in Toamasina, the establishment of a civil protection unit specializing in industrial risks, the construction of a market in Moramanga, the rehabilitation of a section of road in Ambatondrazaka, urban waste management in the cities of Toamasina and Moramanga, and support for JIRAMA in Toamasina in the improvement of power supply in this city.
Le marché de Bazary Be de Toamasina, entièrement rénové par Ambatovy, a été inauguré ce 20 juin 2014, en présence du Président de la République de Madagascar, SEM Hery Rajaonarimampianina, et du Vice-Président d’Ambatovy en charge du Développement Durable, M. Louis Roland-Gosselin. La rénovation de ce marché fait partie des premiers projets financés par le Fonds d’investissement social d’Ambatovy destiné à financer des projets sociaux et des infrastructures dans les régions d’implantation de la compagnie.
« C’est avec un grand plaisir, que nous sommes avec vous aujourd’hui pour remettre à la commune de Toamasina ce nouveau Bazary Be, dont nous espérons bien qu’il participera au développement des échanges commerciaux dans la ville de Tamatave et, par là, à son enrichissement», a déclaré le Vice-Président d’Ambatovy en charge du Développement Durable, Louis Roland-Gosselin, durant la cérémonie d’inauguration. « Notre souhait le plus cher est de contribuer activement au développement de Madagascar et cela de plusieurs manières : nous souhaitons aider votre gouvernement à convaincre d’autres investisseurs majeurs de venir s’installer à Madagascar, nous voulons participer au développement et à la montée en gamme du tissu économique du pays et nous voulons apporter notre contribution à la formation des acteurs de ce développement, en particulier par le biais de la formation professionnelle », a –t-il continué.
Le nouveau marché, d’une superficie de plus de 5 300 m², pourra accueillir plus de 750 marchands. Le marché est doté de plusieurs installations connexes comme des points d’eau et sanitaires. Outre le bâtiment principal qui recevra les commerces alimentaires et manufacturés, les poissonneries et les gargotiers, des pavillons et des abris sont aussi disponibles pour les marchands de produits artisanaux, de meubles, de fruits ainsi que les marchands de fleurs et plantes vertes.
A titre de rappel, dans le cadre de ses engagements pour le développement durable, Ambatovy a mis en place un fonds d’investissement social d’une valeur de 25 millions de dollars, en 2012, pour financer des projets sociaux et des infrastructures dans les régions d’implantation de la compagnie. Les projets sont choisis en concertation avec les autorités régionales et le gouvernement de Madagascar dans le but de contribuer au développement social et économique des populations dans ces régions. Huit autres projets sont actuellement financés par le fonds d’investissement social d’Ambatovy, notamment le projet avicole Harenasoa dans les communes traversées par le pipeline, la destruction de l’ammoniac dans l’ancien site de Zeren à Toamasina, la mise en place d’une unité de protection civile spécialisée dans les risques industriels, la construction d’un marché à Moramanga, la réhabilitation d’une portion de route à Ambatondrazaka , la gestion des déchets urbains dans les villes de Toamasina et Moramanga, et l’appui de la JIRAMA de Toamasina pour améliorer la fourniture d’électricité dans la ville.
