Ambatovy participated in the International Scientific Conference by the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC), which was held at the CCI Ivato, Tana, from July 30 to August 3, 2019, under the theme “Tropical Biology and Sustainable Development.” It was an opportunity for the company, which was represented by the Mine Environment Department team, to present its actions in the field of biodiversity conservation and environmental protection activities, through three posters, four oral presentations and a workshop.
Several topics were addressed, including the protection of orchid species in Ambatovy; the application of ecological restoration science at Ambatovy; links between income-generating activities and the conservation effort in the Offset areas; the new nesting site of the Madagascar heron, Ardeola idia, at the Ambatovy Mine Site; the environmental management system at Ambatovy; the analysis of anthropogenic pressure movements in the Ankerana Offset area; and the follow-up to understand the territories of the Anas melleri at the Mine. With the assistance of other partners, Ambatovy also initiated a workshop on improving forest conservation and ecological restoration in Madagascar.
This international event saw the participation of over 800 people from 55 countries, which is a first for Madagascar, but also for Ambatovy. Our booth was visited by scientists and representatives of institutions from different countries; including Qatar, Japan, the USA, Rwanda, Sweden, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Malaysia, etc. The exchanges largely focused on our conservation actions, with a particular emphasis on the various aspects of our reforestation plan, in addition to questions about Ambatovy in general.
