Although the fish farming sector was relatively unknown a few years ago, following the support provided by Ambatovy to some innovators, it is currently attracting more and more farmers in Moramanga and its surroundings. Considering this interest, earlier this year, Ambatovy provided more than 1,900 fingerlings for 11 fish grow out sites, three of which are managed by village associations (Miara Mijoro Ambonidobo, FIMIAM, RIAN ‘ALA).These fingerlings come from two of the five showcase sites, which, like the 11 grow out sites, were set up thanks to Ambatovy’s support. In fact, for the showcase sites that are specialized in fingerling production, Ambatovy took care of the site development, the start-up launch, as well as the training in breeding techniques for the farmers. For their part, the breeders take charge of the farm management and security. In addition, Ambatovy technicians continue to support the development of the sector by providing regular technical support, both for fingerling production and the grow out sites. It should be recalled that at the beginning of the project, these fingerling producers conducted an exchange visit with other fish farmers from the Region of Itasy, supervised by some agents from the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock, in order to acquire more practical skills from their counterparts. Ambatovy also makes it easier for these farms to get fingerlings from the showcase sites. Given its profitability and complementarity with other income-generating activities, including small-scale farming and truck farming, many farmers in the region have already expressed interest in joining this fish farming project.
