The 2015 Green Star Award for the category of Prevention and Preparedness was awarded to Ambatovy in recognition of its commitments and activities in terms of prevention of and preparedness for industrial and chemical hazards. The award, granted jointly by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Activities (UNOCHA) and the Green Cross, was presented to Ambatovy on June 1, 2015, in Oslo (Norway) at the Global Environmental Emergencies Forum.
Within the framework of industrial risk prevention and preparedness, Ambatovy has played a pioneering role among private companies. In addition to its institutional commitment, the company financially and technically contributed to the APELL (Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at Local Level) and CAPP (Chemical Accident Prevention Program) processes in Madagascar, initiated the development of the first Specific Intervention Plans for dismantling ammonia, SO2 and H2S industrial waste with the technical support of the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management, the French Cooperation, UNEP and UNOCHA. The recent neutralization of 26 tonnes of ammonia stored for over 30 years in Toamasina, and around which 4,000 people were living, the establishment of the Civil Protection Corps, and that of the Crisis Management Center, which focuses on chemical accidents, all illustrate Ambatovy’s commitment to industrial risk prevention and preparedness in Toamasina.
