On Friday 29th June, during celebrations for Pan-African Civil Servant Day in Antananarivo, Eric Gagnon, Ambatovy’s Manager for Social Development, handed over a cheque for MGA 72 million to the Minister of Labouras a contribution towards the renovation work required to set up a District Employment Office in Moramanga.
An agreement was signed between the Ministry of Labour and Ambatovy in April 2012 establishing the roles of each party in the development of a new District Employment Office, similar to that in which Ambatovy was involved in Toamasina.
Ambatovy takes its social commitments very seriously and strives to be a responsible member of the local community, which is what led to the development of a Regional Employment Office (BRE, in French) in Toamasina. As the Construction phase of Ambatovy’s facilities came to a close, thousands of skilled construction workers needed to seek out and secure new opportunities. The employment office provides a formal setting where companies and potential employees come together to match up job seekers with various employers in the region.
Each week, the BRE in Toamasina now records an average of 350 visitors and receives approximately six job postings from employers across all sectors. The success of the Toamasina Employment Office has been such that it was agreed that a second office should be set up in Moramanga, with Ambatovy as a key investor once again. The funding provided by Ambatovy will be used in the renovation of the office building and equipping it with the necessary office furniture and computer equipment. Funds will also cover the cost of training staff and the running costs of the BDE for the first two years.
Ambatovy’s strategic social investments and partnerships at both the local and governmental level provide a solid foundation for sustainable development, and Ambatovy expects that over its 30-year lifespan these investments will significantly improve the standard of living for thousands of Malagasy people.
