Ambatovy and Conservation International signed the renewal of the collaboration agreement between the two parties concerning the protection of the Ankerana forest massif, on April 11, 2022, in Antananarivo.
Renewed for a period of 5 years, the Convention covers the mechanisms for collaboration, support and exchange between the two parties regarding conservation and the rational and sustainable management of natural resources within and around the Ankerana forest massif, which is part of the Ambatovy biodiversity compensation sites (or offset Sites). The Convention aims to uphold the integrity of the site in order to compensate for residual losses in biodiversity and ecosystem services due to Ambatovy’s mining operations while promoting the benefits and sustainable use of biodiversity.
Ambatovy will provide the technical and financial support necessary to conduct management and conservation activities. For its part, Conservation International is committed, among other things, to setting up operational strategies and conducting and implementing activities while ensuring consistency between conservation goals and socio-environmental issues around the site in order to achieve the Convention’s objectives.
For Conservation International, since the Ankerana massif is part of the Ankeniheny Zahamena Corridor, the conservation of Ankerana will contribute to preserving this large protected area in eastern Madagascar. For Ambatovy, in accordance with its Environmental Management and Social Development Plan (PGEDS), the conservation of the Ankerana Massif is part of its environmental management actions based on the most stringent national and international performance standards, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards and those of the Business and Biodiversity Offsets Program (BBOP).
