4,000 young chickens were distributed on May 31st, 2017, as part of a pilot project in support of the broiler farming income generating activity (IGA), which is intended for 40 households living around Ambatovy’s Tailings, in Toamasina II. 15,200 poultry, including young broilers, local breeds, young roosters, laying hens, and ducks, have been distributed by Ambatovy since 2014 in order to improve the living conditions of 350 households in the Atsinanana Region. Hence, the Company supports the development of poultry farming, a blooming sector that creates direct and indirect employment and stays valuable for the local economy. To support them in the starting phase, Ambatovy gave the needed inputs along with technical supports with some experts in the sector. Every beneficiary received local materials (wood, bamboo …) for the henhouse construction and grains throughout the whole farming cycle to start the activity. The project adds to the other three farming projects that are already implemented by Ambatovy in the Atsinanana Region; including the Harenasoa Project financed by Ambatovy’s Social Investment Fund, and two IGA projects for the population in the resettlement village of Vohitrambato, which focus on laying hen, broiler, local breeds, and duck farming.
