Harnessing international best-practice to
contribute to environmental stewardship
Ambatovy’s environmental activities are conducted according to
its government-approved Environmental and Social Management
Plan, which is based on the national decree concerning
environmental compliance for investment projects in Madagascar
(in French,
this decree is called
Mise En Compatibilité des
Investissements avec l’Environnement
) and the International
Finance Corporation’s Performance Standards.
Ambatovy’s environmental program is monitored for compliance
by regulators from the Government of Madagascar, third parties
who conduct periodic assessments for the lending institutions
that provided Ambatovy with project financing, as well as by an
independent Scientific Consultative Committee made up of national
and international experts.
Biodiversity
Madagascar is amongst the most bio-diverse environments on
Earth. Since 2007 Ambatovy has had a Biodiversity Management
Plan, which includes a goal to achieve no net loss and preferably a
net gain in relation to sites where there are high biodiversity values.
Ambatovy has implemented a best-practice mitigation hierarchy
(illustrated below) aimed at achieving no net loss, and preferably
a net gain, in Madagascar’s biodiversity. Much of Ambatovy’s work
on biodiversity is guided by its involvement in the Business and
Biodiversity Offsets Program (BBOP), an international partnership
of conservation organizations, scientists, corporations and
governments, to ensure that any losses of biodiversity are offset
through the conservation of comparable habitat.
