Slurried lateritic ore is delivered from the Mine Site via a 220 km Pipeline to a processing plant and refinery located near Toamasina on Madagascar\u2019s east coast. In September 2015, the company reached Financial Completion. Following an interruption in our operations in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ambatovy has returned to operations in March 2021. Our operations are designed to annualy produce approximately 40,000 tonnes of refined nickel, 4,000 tonnes of refined cobalt and 120,000 tonnes of ammonium sulphate, a by-product of the refining aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-minesite\" id=\"tab-20a7c3623db09274430\">\n<h1 style=\"font-weight: 300; margin-top: -20px;\">Mine Site<\/h1>\n<p>The Mine Site is located 80 km east of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, near the town of Moramanga. The Mine is only a few kilometers from the road and rail networks that connect it to the port city of Toamasina, on the east coast.<\/p>\n<p>The ore body at the Mine consists of two large, weathered lateritic nickel deposits located approximately 3 km apart (the \u201cAmbatovy Deposit\u201d and the \u201cAnalamay Deposit\u201d). Combined, the Ambatovy and Analamay Deposits constitute one of the world\u2019s biggest lateritic nickel reserves, covering an area of about 1,600 ha, with depths ranging between 20 and 100 m. Ore is surface-mined by hydraulic excavators and delivered to the Ore Preparation Plant (OPP) in articulated haulage trucks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:40px;width:100%;\"><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15884\" src=\"https:\/\/ambatovy.com\/ang\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_8665.jpg\" alt=\"Mine Moramanga 2\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:40px;width:100%;\"><\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h1 style=\"font-weight: 300; margin-top: -20px;\">Ore Preparation Plant<\/h1>\n<p>The OPP is located at the Mine Site and separates the soft lateritic soil from rock and waste material. The laterite is combined with water to produce a slurried ore, which is pumped into the pipeline that links the Mine to the Plant Site 220 km away. With the difference in elevation between the Mine and the Plant site, the design has maximized the use of gravity to minimize the need for energy-intensive pumping facilities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:40px;width:100%;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\"><li><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-c86c281b1bd3cfbf1c2\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-pipeline\" href=\"#tab-c86c281b1bd3cfbf1c2\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">Pipeline<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-pipeline\" id=\"tab-c86c281b1bd3cfbf1c2\">\n<h1 style=\"font-weight: 300; margin-top: -20px;\">Pipeline<\/h1>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Nearly 22,000 lengths of 60 cm pipe were welded together to construct the pipeline that connects the\u00a0Mine\u00a0to the\u00a0Plant Site. The pipeline has a proven design, similar to pipelines operating elsewhere in the world, and has a capacity to transport 826 tonnes of slurried ore per hour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">From the\u00a0Ore Preparation Plant, the slurry is pumped into the pipeline where it begins a 220 km, 30 hour, downhill journey to the Plant Site. Most of the energy needed to move the ore through the pipeline comes from the 1,000 m difference in elevation between the Mine and Plant Site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">For nearly all of its length, the pipeline is buried using standard \u201ccut and cover\u201d construction to an average depth of 1.5 m. Facilities were designed, built, and now operate in accordance with Malagasy regulations and the World Bank Group\u2019s\u00a0International Finance Corporation Performance Standards.<\/p>\n<p>At the Plant Site, the ore undergoes numerous steps \u2013 collectively known as the hydrometallurgical process \u2013 which ultimately yields refined nickel and cobalt, both of minimum 99.9% purity. The tailings \u2013 residue with no commercial value left over after mining, processing, and refining \u2013 are neutralized and pumped from the Plant Site through a 15 km pipeline to the Tailings Site, a secure, stabilized area where the treated residue is deposited for permanent safekeeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Tailings Management Facility (TMF) was designed to meet international good practice standards including the requirements of the Canadian Dam Association and the International Commission on Large Dams. It is managed and monitored 24\/7 by a dedicated team of engineers who are supported by independent consultants. An independent engineer of record carries out quarterly inspections, undertakes an annual audit of the TMF and produces a report for Management. In addition, an independent Geotechnical Review Board inspects the Facility on an annual basis and reviews operational reports, policies and procedures. The Facility is also inspected annually by the Malagasy government regulator, the ONE. We have also begun implementing the TSM\u2019s Tailings Management Protocol.<\/p>\n<p>Excess water from the Tailings is discharged into the ocean through a diffuser system designed to minimize localized impacts. A portion of this water is available to be reused at the Plant Site. When the Tailings Site has been filled, it will be reclaimed and drainage systems will be re-established.<\/p>\n<p>The Tailings site was chosen because of its relatively low impact on the environment and local communities. Nevertheless, <a href=\"https:\/\/ambatovy.com\/ang\/sustainability\/communities\/compensation-and-resettlement\/\">154 families had to be relocated<\/a>. This huge volume required a substantial upgrading of the Port and Railway infrastructure of Toamasina, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A substantial extension of Pier B (Mole B, in French) included a new fuel terminal at the northern end of the Pier B Quay .<\/li>\n<li>Advanced equipment, including a belt feeder and ammonia unloading arm, for handling the import of bulk raw materials.<\/li>\n<li>A 24 km railway loop that includes a railway crossing, aerial bridge crossing, and a wagon loading and unloading station<\/li>\n<li>Seven diesel electric locomotives and seventy-nine open top hopper wagons to transport the bulk raw materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As part of its design and construction efforts, Ambatovy worked in close collaboration with the local port authority and other businesses, all of which will continue to benefit significantly from these upgrades. Ambatovy\u2019s port facility is certified under the International Ship and Port Facility (ISPS) Code, which is renewed every five years. To ensure our facility continuously conforms with the ISPS and maintains all the appropriate measures- including aligning with our internal Fatality Prevention Standards- we carry out frequent reviews of our operations for compliance and are also regularly inspected by the Malagasy Port Authority.<\/p>\n<p>For the railway line, Ambatovy works in collaboration with the national railway operator MADARAIL (MADAgascar RAILway). Around 300 MADARAIL employees ensure the operation, maintenance and safety of the transportation of Ambatovy\u2019s bulk materials via locomotive from the Port to the Plant site. Parts of the railway pass closely by communities, therefore the appropriate norms and standards have to be strictly followed in order to reduce the risk of incidents and accidents. The applicable norms and standards include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The European Norm UIC (Union International des Chemin de fer) for the construction and maintenance of railway infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>National code RGE (Reglement general d\u2019Exploitation) for the railway\u2019s operation and traffic management, which is a national railway law inspired from European Norm.<\/li>\n<li>And the Association of America Railroads (AAR) standards for the construction of Ambatovy\u2019s locomotives and wagons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Systematic audits by independent experts ensure that we maintain these standards throughout our operations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:40px;width:100%;\"><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-800 wp-image-15901\" src=\"https:\/\/ambatovy.com\/ang\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_8578-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\"><li><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-d4d7859be2a80361730\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-otherinfrastructure\" href=\"#tab-d4d7859be2a80361730\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">Other Infrastructure<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-otherinfrastructure\" id=\"tab-d4d7859be2a80361730\">\n<h1 style=\"font-weight: 300; margin-top: -20px;\">Other Infrastructure<\/h1>\n<p>As one of the largest \u201cgreenfield\u201d mining projects in the world at the time of its construction, Ambatovy had to make a substantial investment to establish the infrastructure required by a project of this size and complexity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ancillary Industrial Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An ammonia storage facility was constructed approximately mid-way between the Port and the Plant Site. A pipeline transports the ammonia between the two locations. Like all of Ambatovy\u2019s pipelines, this one has been buried to avoid tampering and to ensure safety and reliability.<\/p>\n<p>Other major industrial facilities constructed by Ambatovy include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A coal-fired, steam and electricity generating station, which includes three units rated at 40 megawatts each;<\/li>\n<li>Plants to produce oxygen, hydrogen, sulfuric acid, and hydrogen sulfide;<\/li>\n<li>A water treatment plant;<\/li>\n<li>Residential and recreational facilities for staff;<\/li>\n<li>A fully equipped, professionally staffed medical
