Health & Safety

The health and safety of Ambatovy’s employees, contractors, and neighboring communities is one of the company’s top priorities. Ambatovy’s “zero incident” policy provides the framework that guides every staff member’s day-to-day commitment to a safe working environment.

Nevertheless, Ambatovy is an industrial enterprise that requires the use of powerful equipment and potentially hazardous materials. This makes ensuring an injury-free workplace one of Ambatovy’s greatest challenges. Significant resources are expended annually to manage and minimize safety risks.

The three main goals of Ambatovy’s health and safety policy are to:

  • Provide the best working and safety conditions for employees;

  • Identify potential hazards and mitigate them;

  • Avoid accidents, injuries, property damage, occupational illnesses, and production losses.

Consistent with Ambatovy’s zero incident policy, health and safety activities are organized around three principles:

  • Prevention;

  • Rapid response;

  • Performance monitoring.

All employees, contractors, and visitors receive comprehensive health and personal safety training. This training covers general information about security measures, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and workplace risk assessment. All employees and visitors are required to wear PPE at all times while on site.

As an example of Ambatovy’s preventive measures, all company vehicles, and those of sub-contractors, are equipped with GPS devices which allow the monitoring of safe driving practices. Ambatovy’s drivers also receive specialized training.

Rapid response

All potentially hazardous situations and risks are continuously assessed. Whenever an incident occurs, immediate action is systematically taken according to Ambatovy’s rapid response plans. An emergency intervention team is on duty at all times in the unlikely event of an incident.

Performance monitoring

Ambatovy regularly measures its health and safety performance to ensure continuous improvement and safe production through comprehensive auditing and reporting procedures.

Ambatovy is working toward OHSAS 18001 certification for its safety management system. OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) 18001 is the highest international standard for occupational health and safety.
