Ambatovy has fast become one of the largest consumers of goods and services in Madagascar. By maximizing local procurement, Ambatovy provides a much-needed boost to the Malagasy economy and local entrepreneurs. To date, Ambatovy has spent approximately $3.3 billion in local purchasing, with $210 million spent on local purchases in 2016.

The Ambatovy Local Business Initiative (ALBI) was designed to provide support to local businesses and entrepreneurs and to help create employment opportunities. ALBI offers small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) training and capacity building aimed at improving the quality of their products and services, which will help make them more competitive in the marketplace.

Key Highlights:

  • More than 850 SMMEs across 40 sectors were given purchase orders by Ambatovy in 2016;

  • To date, Ambatovy has provided local SMMEs with more than 20,000 hours of training in accounting, project management, leadership, quality control, contract administration, procurement, environment, health and safety, industrial relations, change and growth management;

  • From 2012-2014, more than 18,000 former employees and people living in areas affected by Ambatovy’s activities received training in sustainable agriculture techniques at the Agricultural Training Center.
